ALEXANDRIA, Va. — The Alexandria Police Department has appointed Capt. Mike May and Capt. Jason North as its newest assistant chiefs, the agency announced, capping a national search that drew more than 50 applicants.

Both selections came from inside the department. May joined APD in 1997 and most recently led the Criminal Investigations Division. North joined in 2005 and most recently commanded Patrol Operations for Sector One, which includes Old Town Alexandria. Together, the two bring nearly 50 years of combined service.

The Alexandria Police Department is pleased to announce the appointment of Captain Mike May and Captain Jason North as the Department’s newest Assistant Chiefs following a highly competitive national search process that received more than 50 applicants. (APD)

"After a comprehensive national search, these two leaders rose to the top," Chief Tarrick McGuire said in a statement. "Assistant Chief appointees Mike May and Jason North have demonstrated exceptional leadership throughout their careers and are the best leaders to help move our department forward."

The appointments give McGuire — the city's third permanent police chief in three years, sworn in in December 2024 — two senior leaders to anchor a command staff he has been steadily building since arriving from the Arlington, Texas Police Department. McGuire has emphasized community-oriented policing as a cornerstone of his tenure, and the department's release described May as "widely recognized for his longstanding commitment to community engagement and youth outreach throughout Alexandria."

Across his nearly three-decade career with APD, May has led Patrol Operations, Emergency Readiness, Hiring and Recruitment, and the Hostage Negotiations Team. He is a graduate of the FBI National Academy and the Metropolitan Police Leadership Academy.

North's previous leadership posts include assignments in Technology Services, Traffic Safety and Strategic Initiatives. He is a graduate of the FBI National Academy and the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments Institute for Regional Excellence.

Both will serve in interim capacities until the effective date of their formal promotions, the department said. A promotion ceremony and permanent bureau assignments are expected to be announced in the coming months.

The appointments come during a year in which the department has reported sharp declines in major crime categories. Part I crimes — including homicide, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny and auto theft — fell 29.8% from January through October 2025 compared with the same period in 2024, a result McGuire has attributed to partnerships with city agencies, civic associations and retail establishments. The department has also navigated staffing pressures that have at times required the chief to shift officers from specialized units back to patrol.
