ALEXANDRIA, Va. — After more than 16 years, Alexandria's rugby community is heading back to Dundee, Scotland, this August to reclaim a trophy that has been sitting across the Atlantic since the original series — and there are two chances to send them off before they go.
The Alexandria Mayors' Cup Rugby Team will travel to Dundee from August 4-8, 2026, to compete in three matches against Alexandria's Scottish sister city: the Veterans Rugby Challenge for the Gavin Garden Cup, the Ladies Rugby Challenge for the Lord Provost Cup, and the Men's Rugby Challenge for the Mayor's Cup. The competition was first played in 2008 and 2009, with Dundee's Lord Provost Select XV winning both matches and taking home the trophy. Mayor Alyia Gaskins announced the revival last December, with Alexandria aiming to finally bring the cup home.
This year's trip also makes history: it marks the first time a women's squad will represent Alexandria in the Cup. Selection was competitive — multiple rounds ran from August 2025 through April 2026 before final rosters were named. Players are funding their own way, with every dollar raised going toward reimbursing flight, lodging and living expenses. Alexandria Rugby is a 501(c)(3); donations are tax-deductible. The team has raised $430 toward a $6,000 goal — you can donate on GoFundMe.
Rugby Ball at the New Zealand Embassy — this Saturday
The first send-off event is this Saturday, June 27, from 6-9 p.m. at the New Zealand Embassy in Washington. The Rugby Ball benefit is open to the public — tickets are $100 and include dinner, drinks, a live DJ and band. Black tie dress code. Proceeds help fund the team's trip to Scotland.
Raffle: Win a trip to Scotland
The team is also selling raffle tickets at $100 each for a chance to win an all-expenses-paid trip for three to Scotland, including a round at St Andrews Golf Links. Proceeds support youth, high school and adult rugby programs in the community.
Free community send-off — July 26
Mayor Gaskins is hosting a free, all-ages send-off party for the players on Sunday, July 26, from 12-3 p.m. at the Fraternal Order of the Eagles, 1015 Cameron St. The event will include a chance to meet the players and rugby demonstrations. Register here.
