ALEXANDRIA, Va. — The city's Department of Transportation and Environmental Services will repave more than a dozen streets across Alexandria from Monday through Friday, the latest stretch of an annual maintenance season that began April 20 and is expected to run through November.

The department oversees more than 561 lane miles of roadway, along with sidewalks and alleys, and resurfaces roughly 50 lane miles each year. The work also includes repairs to concrete curbs and gutters and upgrades to curb access ramps to bring them into compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Sixteen streets are on the initial phase of this year's schedule, and 13 of them are slated for work between April 27 and May 1. They include Hillside Terrace from Crest Street to Valley Drive; Summit Avenue from Cameron Mills Road to Dogwood Drive; Jamieson Avenue from Holland Lane to West Street; North Peyton Street from King Street to its end; and South Peyton Street from King Street to Duke Street.

Crews will also work on Old Dominion Boulevard from West Glebe Road to Four Mile Run; LaVerne Avenue from East Glebe Road to Wilson Avenue; Rapidan Court from Polk Street to its end; Holmes Run Parkway from North Chambliss Street to its end; and Hawthorne Avenue from Hatton Court to Holmes Run Parkway.

Additional streets on next week's schedule are West Bellefonte Avenue from Russell Road to Commonwealth Avenue, Hatton Court from Doris Drive to the city limits and West Abingdon Drive from Washington Street to its end.

Normal paving hours run from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., though some work on heavily traveled roads will be done overnight. Crews will use heavy equipment that can be noisy at times. Access to streets being paved will be limited during working hours, but workers will let local drivers through for driveway access, and roads will be fully reopened each evening for overnight parking and traffic. City staff will be on site to manage the work.

Businesses and residents along the affected streets typically receive advance notice through project signs, letters or door hangers, and temporary "No Parking" signs will be posted before work begins. The city is urging drivers to observe the signs to avoid tickets or towing.

Officials cautioned that the schedule is subject to change. Weather, equipment availability, other city projects and coordination with utility work can all affect the timing of repaving operations. The city said the program is part of a broader effort to improve road safety and infrastructure.
