Alexandria's August 4 dual primary is 20 days away. Here's what you need to know

Democrats are on pace with more than 7,700 ballots already cast or sent; Republicans have topped 1,000

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — With 20 days until Alexandria's August 4 dual primary election, early voting is already well underway — and key deadlines are approaching fast.

The primary features two contests: a Democratic primary for the 8th District seat in the U.S. House of Representatives and a Republican primary for U.S. Senate. Alexandria had approximately 100,793 registered voters as of November 2025, according to state data.

Who's on the ballot

Five candidates are competing in the Democratic primary for the 8th District House seat: Mo Seifeldein, Michael Christian Duffin, incumbent Donald S. Beyer Jr., Adam M. Dunigan, and Lorena Thorne Bruner.

Three candidates are competing in the Republican primary for U.S. Senate: Bert Mizusawa, Kim Farington, and David E. Williams.

Early voting numbers

As of July 13, 7,711 total mail-in ballots and early in-person voters have been recorded on the Democratic side. Of those, 7,184 mail-in ballots have been sent, with 2,519 already returned and 4,379 still awaiting return. Another 527 voters have cast early in-person ballots. Thirty-three ballots need cure and 253 were unmarked or undeliverable.

On the Republican side, 1,056 total mail-in ballots and early in-person voters have been recorded. Of those, 1,028 mail-in ballots have been sent, with 272 returned and 709 still awaiting return. Twenty-eight voters have cast early in-person ballots. Five ballots need cure and 42 were unmarked or undeliverable.

Key deadlines

Both the voter registration deadline and the deadline to request a mail-in ballot are Friday, July 24. Early voting is available Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Office of Voter Registration and Elections at 132 N. Royal St., Suite 100.

Beginning Sunday, July 19, early voting also expands to Beatley Central Library at 5005 Duke St. on weekends. Extended evening hours at the Royal Street office run through August 1. The last day for early in-person voting at both locations is Saturday, August 1.

A secure ballot drop box is available 24 hours a day outside the Royal Street office through 7 p.m. on election day.
