ALEXANDRIA, Va. — ALIVE!, the Alexandria nonprofit that delivers food and furniture to residents in need, is recruiting volunteer box truck drivers and will hold a hands-on orientation Sept. 20 for people considering it.
Truck-A-Palooza runs from 3 to 5 p.m. at the ALIVE! warehouse, 801 S. Payne St. It is free, and registration is capped at the first 20 people.
Volunteer drivers move food to distribution events and furniture to families setting up households. Without them, the organization says, its deliveries do not go out.
A commercial driver's license is not required to operate the organization's box trucks. Volunteers must be at least 21, hold a valid driver's license and a good driving record, and carry standard auto insurance.
The afternoon is built around five stations covering vehicle walkarounds, loading, backing and general safety, and includes a chance to drive one of the trucks. ALIVE! says it is open both to current volunteers who want to build skills and to people who have never driven for the organization.
