Ben & Jerry's Free Cone Day returns to Old Town Alexandria on April 14, with the locally owned scoop shop at 103 S. Union St. offering free ice cream cones to the public from noon to 8 p.m.
The annual tradition, which began in 1979, has grown into a global event spanning more than 35 countries. Last year, Ben & Jerry's served more than 1 million free scoops worldwide.
Free Cone Day traces its roots to 1979, when co-founders Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield handed out free scoops as a thank-you to customers who helped the fledgling Burlington, Vermont, shop survive its first winter.
The Old Town Alexandria shop, which also offers catering, ice cream cakes and delivery, is located at 103 S. Union St. and can be reached at (703) 535-5485. More information is available at benjerry.com.
