ALEXANDRIA, Va. — The city will host a pre-construction community meeting May 11 to brief residents on upcoming roadway and sidewalk work along South Patrick Street, ahead of a construction start scheduled for June 1.
The meeting will run from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Nannie J. Lee Recreation Center, 1108 Jefferson St. Virtual attendance is also available via Zoom; registration is required at alexandriava.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_9JxrPqloQyKOnpy-gwZ0Dg.
City staff will walk through the scope and schedule of the work, which is expected to run through late January 2027. Construction hours will be 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturdays.
The project, formally known as the U.S. Route 1 South Median Refuge Island Project, covers South Patrick Street between Jefferson Street and Wolfe Street. It will widen the existing median from four feet to nine feet, narrow the travel lanes from 12 feet to 11 feet, plant street trees, and add pedestrian refuge areas at each intersection. Crosswalks, curb ramps and pedestrian signals will also be upgraded.

The design grew out of the 2018 South Patrick Street Housing Affordability Strategy and was later updated to reflect the city's Vision Zero plan, which aims to eliminate traffic fatalities and severe injuries by 2028, and Complete Streets design guidelines. City planners have framed the project as a way to "stitch together" the Southwest Quadrant neighborhood and Old Town, which Route 1 has long divided.
Construction is funded by a federal grant administered by the Virginia Department of Transportation. The city completed VDOT's Willingness to Hold a Public Hearing process last year.
