The City of Alexandria will host a neighborhood meeting Thursday, April 16, to update residents on upcoming maintenance work along Hooff's Run and planned improvements to a nearby park — work that will require closing the park and its tennis courts for up to six months.
The meeting begins at 11:30 a.m. at the park located between the intersections of East Oak Street and East Walnut Street with Commonwealth Avenue.

The project, the second phase of the Hooff's Run Culvert Maintenance effort, calls for replacing the top section of the culvert running beneath the park after structural issues were identified during recent inspections. The Department of Recreation, Parks & Cultural Activities will also make improvements to the park and tennis courts once the culvert work is complete.
Construction is tentatively scheduled to begin in May or June and is expected to last five to six months depending on weather. Work will take place Monday through Friday between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m., with no work on weekends or holidays. The park will remain closed for the full duration of the project, and the staging area will be located within the park. Crews may also implement temporary lane closures in the surrounding area for material delivery and removal, and residents are asked to observe any no-parking signs posted nearby.
At the Thursday meeting, staff from the Department of Transportation & Environmental Services and the Department of Recreation, Parks & Cultural Activities will walk residents through the scope of the culvert work, explain how it will affect public spaces during construction, and outline what park and tennis court improvements are planned for when repairs wrap up. Staff will take questions following the presentation.
Residents with questions or concerns in the meantime can contact lisa.jaatinen@alexandriava.gov or reach the city through Alex311 at alexandriava.gov/Alex311. Additional information on the project is available on the city's website.
