Alexandria City Council holds its second and final FY 2027 budget public hearing Saturday at 9:30 a.m. at the Del Pepper Community Resource Center, 4850 Mark Center Drive — the last opportunity for residents to address council directly before work sessions wrap up and the April 29 adoption vote.
The hearing covers the same scope as Monday's: City Manager James Parajon's proposed $977 million operating budget, the proposed capital improvement program through FY 2036, and proposed tax rate recommendations.
Monday's first hearing drew 33 speakers, dominated by three themes: calls to cut Sheriff Sean Casey's budget over his voluntary ICE collaboration, demands for expanded affordable housing investment, and advocacy for the full 3.5% ACPS appropriation increase. The ICE Out of Alexandria coalition, which organized Monday's turnout, announced plans to return Saturday.
Saturday's docket also includes one action item: the second reading and final passage of a rezoning ordinance for the Duke and Quaker townhomes project at 11 and 21 North Quaker Lane and 3369 Duke Street, which the council approved in February. Two Planning Commission items — a withdrawn subdivision at 3833-3837 Elbert Avenue and an approved three-townhouse project at 806 North Columbus Street — are on the docket for information only and require no council action.
Council will also open the meeting with a public discussion period for items not on the agenda; the first 15 speakers go at the start, and any remaining speakers follow the docketed items. A lunch break is planned mid-docket, if needed.
The hearing can be watched live on government channel 70 and at alexandriava.gov. To speak, register via Zoom or submit a speaker form at apps.alexandriava.gov/SpeakerSignup. Written comments can be emailed to CouncilComment@alexandriava.gov. Translation services are available with 48 hours' notice at gloria.sitton@alexandriava.gov or 703-746-4550.
Budget work sessions continue through March 25. Adoption is April 29.
