Free legal help for renters with housing problems offered Aug. 31 in the West End

Legal Aid Justice Center will give individual consultations; code, health and 311 staff will be on hand

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — Renters dealing with mold, pests, broken heat or other housing conditions can get free legal advice and talk directly with city staff at a clinic later this month in the West End.

The Housing Conditions Clinic runs Monday, Aug. 31, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the William Ramsay Recreation Center, 5650 Sanger Ave. The Office of Housing is hosting it alongside the Legal Aid Justice Center, the Department of Code Administration, the Health Department and Alex311.

Legal Aid Justice Center attorneys will provide individual legal consultations. Tenants are asked to bring their lease and any documentation of the conditions they're dealing with — photos, repair requests, correspondence with a landlord.

Registration is requested through the city's online form. Interpretation is available by language line on request, and attendees are asked to note their preferred language when registering so the city can plan. The city has published flyers in EnglishSpanishAmharic, and Arabic, and directs Amharic speakers to a separate registration form.

Parking is available around the recreation center, and the DASH 35 bus stops nearby.
