ALEXANDRIA, Va. — Jair Lynch Real Estate Partners broke ground Tuesday on the second apartment building at The Heritage at Old Town, a 288-unit project at 535 S. Alfred St. that the developer says will be finished in 2029.

Mayor Alyia Gaskins joined Virginia Secretary of Commerce and Trade Carrie Chenery, Virginia Housing Chief of Programs Monique Johnson and U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Field Director Jill Yu at the ceremony, according to a release from the developer.

The building will hold 48 studios, 184 one-bedroom apartments and 56 two-bedroom apartments. Fifty-two will be affordable: 51 for households earning up to 40% of area median income and one for a household earning up to 60%. A HUD Housing Assistance Payments contract supports 51 units. The project also includes work on the eastern portion of Wilkes Street Park.
