Drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians who count on North Beauregard Street should plan for short, on-and-off closures starting Monday, as the city continues its long and costly effort to rebuild the Holmes Run Trail.
The stretch of North Beauregard Street between Sanger Avenue and North Morgan Street will be closed intermittently from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekdays from Monday, April 20, through Tuesday, April 28, according to the city. Each shutdown is expected to last 15 to 30 minutes to accommodate the delivery of equipment and materials tied to the trail repairs.
The first closure will come earlier than the rest. A crane is scheduled to be delivered and installed beginning at about 7 a.m. on April 20. All other deliveries will fall within the midday window.
Detour signs and flaggers will be posted to redirect vehicles, pedestrians, and bicyclists around the work zone, and the city said impacts to school and bus traffic will be limited. Residents are encouraged to use alternate routes while closures are in effect.
The work is the latest visible chapter in a restoration project nearly a decade in the making. Flooding in July 2018 washed out a portion of the Holmes Run Trail in Dora Kelley Park that connects to North Morgan Street, undermining the trail base and boardwalk. Historic flooding across the region the following summer damaged three additional sections of the trail, including two bridges, forcing the city to close them for public safety.
Since then, Alexandria has been working its way through four separate repair sites. Three of them — a bridge at 4600 Duke Street, an access ramp at North Ripley Street, and a bridge west of Interstate 395 near the Morgan Street cul-de-sac — have reopened, with the final two sites completed in September 2025.
The work underway at Dora Kelley Park is the most complex of the four. Construction on a replacement fair-weather crossing began after a notice to proceed was issued Aug. 1, 2025, and is expected to reach substantial completion in fall 2026.
The city has approved $7.2 million through its Capital Improvement Program for the trail repairs, paired with a $5 million grant from the Northern Virginia Transportation Authority awarded in spring 2022 to help fund a raised pedestrian and bicycle bridge at the Dora Kelley site.
