ALEXANDRIA, Va. - Little Birdie, a chicken-focused restaurant from the team behind Matt and Tony's, will open June 23 at 1504 B Mount Vernon Ave., filling the Del Ray space that has been empty since Benny DiForza's Pizza closed last fall. The restaurant announced the date Tuesday on Instagram.

The menu centers on sandwiches served on locally baked Japanese milk bread. Options range from the Birdie's Classic, a spiced thigh with house sauce, garlic dill pickles and cabbage slaw, to the Got' Chu, with gochujang glaze and kimchi mayo. A few non-chicken sandwiches round out the list, including a blackened mahi fillet and a charred wild mushroom option.

The kitchen also offers shareable plates, rice bowls and seasonal salads, plus house-bottled cocktails, spirit-free drinks, local beer and wine. Desserts include a banana split and a snickerdoodle ice cream sandwich.

The restaurant sources its chicken from Pennsylvania farms and works with local bakers for its buns, letting the seasons shape the rest of the menu.

Little Birdie will serve Tuesday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. It will be closed Mondays.
