ALEXANDRIA, Va. — Mayor Alyia Gaskins is launching a new community pilot program this summer that will place local artists inside Alexandria businesses and nontraditional spaces across the city.

Art in Every Space, which Gaskins announced at Tuesday's city council meeting, was inspired by a resident's email. "A resident reached out to me about an idea for putting art in more non traditional spaces, recognizing that we have such a thriving arts and cultural community," Gaskins said. "We've identified businesses from car dealerships to real estate agents who are going to be partnering with local artists to do everything from visual art, like paintings and posters, to even pop-ups of like musical performances."

The program is designed to complement existing arts programming rather than replace it, creating new opportunities for artists and businesses to collaborate.

Artists and businesses interested in participating can contact Robin Jordan, task force lead, at robinjordanart@gmail.com or Christine Macey, Mayor Gaskins' executive assistant, at christine.macey@alexandriava.gov.

Two launch events are planned for next month:

Launch Event 1: Tuesday, July 7, 1-3 p.m. at Corcoran McEnearney, 109 Pitt Street

Launch Event 2: Wednesday, July 8, 5-7 p.m. at AV Actions, 3905 Wheeler Avenue

Both events are open to the public.
