Early voting in Alexandria's April 21 special election has surged in the final stretch, with turnout numbers climbing sharply over the past week as the finish line comes into view.

According to the city's election dashboard, updated through Wednesday, a combined 18,227 Alexandria voters have already cast ballots — 11,967 in person and 6,260 by mail. That represents roughly 17.8% of the city's 102,597 active registered voters, up from about 13% just six days ago.

The single busiest day of early voting so far was Saturday, April 11 — the first Saturday the polls were open — when 1,545 people voted in person, nearly three times the daily average for most of March and a strong signal that extended weekend hours are drawing voters who couldn't make it during the week. Momentum has continued to build this week: 626 voted Monday, 646 Tuesday, and 663 Wednesday. An additional 3,709 mail-in ballots have been sent out but have not yet been returned.

Fifty-eight ballots have been flagged as needing a cure. Voters in that situation should contact the Office of Voter Registration immediately at 703.746.4050 — time is running short.

Early voting ends Saturday

Three days of early voting remain. The Office of Voter Registration and Elections at 132 N. Royal St., Suite 100, is open today until 7 p.m., Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. After Saturday, the only option is Election Day at your assigned polling place.

Check your polling place — four precincts have moved

Four precincts have new locations for this election. Voters in the former Blessed Sacrament precinct will now vote at North Quaker, 1801 N. Quaker Lane. The former City Hall precinct moves to Lyles Crouch School, 530 S. St. Asaph St. — follow signs for Old Town South. The former George Mason School precinct relocates to Trinity Church, 2911 Cameron Mills Road. And the former View Alexandria precinct votes at Hope Way, 2800 Hope Way.

All voters should confirm their polling place at vote.elections.virginia.gov or by calling 703.746.4050 before heading out on Tuesday. Polls open at 6 a.m. and close at 7 p.m. — you must be in line by 7 p.m. to vote.

What's on the ballot

Alexandria voters will decide two contests: the three-way city council special election between Democratic nominee Sandy Marks and independents Frank Fannon and Alison Virginia O'Connell, and a proposed statewide constitutional amendment that would temporarily allow the General Assembly to redraw Virginia's congressional districts. Sample ballots are available at alexandriava.gov/Elections.

Redistricting would keep Alexandria in the 8th — and remake it
Virginia’s proposed 10-1 congressional map keeps Alexandria in the 8th District. But the district it would belong to would bear little resemblance to the one Alexandrians know today.

Bring your ID

Virginia requires voters to show identification. A Virginia driver's license, U.S. passport, employer photo ID or student ID are all acceptable. Voters who arrive without acceptable ID may sign an ID Confirmation Statement and vote a regular ballot.

Missed the registration deadline?

The regular registration deadline passed April 14, but same-day registration is still available on Election Day. Voters who register on Election Day will cast a provisional ballot, which will not appear in unofficial results election night but will be verified and counted in the official tally. Contact the office at voters@alexandriava.gov or 703.746.4050 with questions.

When to expect results

Unofficial results will begin posting on the Virginia Department of Elections website after polls close at 7 p.m. Tuesday. Official results will be certified by state and local electoral boards in the weeks that follow.

Complete election information, including precinct maps, sample ballots and ID requirements, is available at alexandriava.gov/Elections.
