More than a third of Alexandria's registered voters had cast ballots as of noon Tuesday, according to the city's election office.
The city reported that 11,594 people — 11.85% of the electorate — had voted in person on Election Day by noon. Combined with the 22,836 ballots cast during the early voting period, a total of 34,430 votes — 35.18% of Alexandria's 97,875 active registered voters — had been counted at the halfway point of a 13-hour voting day.
That figure is up from 30,657 — 31.32% — reported by the city at 10 a.m., meaning roughly 3,773 additional voters cast ballots in the two hours between updates.
Polls close at 7 p.m. Voters must be in line by 7 p.m. to cast a ballot. Find your polling location at alexandriava.gov/Elections.
Three candidates are on the ballot for the Alexandria City Council special election: Democratic nominee Sandy Marks and independents Frank Fannon and Alison Virginia O'Connell. The winner will fill the seat vacated when Kirk McPike resigned in January to serve in the Virginia House of Delegates. Voters are also deciding a statewide redistricting referendum.
Unofficial results will begin posting on the Virginia Department of Elections website shortly after polls close at 7 p.m. The Alexandria Brief will report results as they come in.
