More than 42,000 Alexandrians have voted in today's special election — polls close at 7 p.m.

With three hours left, turnout has already reached 42.93% of registered voters — well above typical special election levels.

Turnout in Alexandria's April 21 special election is running exceptionally high, with more than 42,000 votes already counted before the final stretch of the day.

According to figures released by the Office of Voter Registration and Elections at 4 p.m., 19,183 people voted in person on Election Day through 4 p.m. Combined with the 22,836 ballots cast during the early voting period, a total of 42,019 votes — 42.93% of Alexandria's 97,875 active registered voters — had been counted with three hours remaining before polls close.

That figure is up sharply from 34,430 — 35.18% — reported at noon, meaning roughly 7,589 additional voters cast ballots in the four hours between updates.

Polls close at 7 p.m. Voters must be in line by 7 p.m. to cast a ballot. Find your polling location at alexandriava.gov/Elections.

Three candidates are on the ballot: Democratic nominee Sandy Marks and independents Frank Fannon and Alison Virginia O'Connell. The winner will fill the seat vacated when Kirk McPike resigned in January to serve in the Virginia House of Delegates. Voters are also deciding a statewide redistricting referendum.

The Office of Voter Registration and Elections will begin posting unofficial results on the Virginia Department of Elections website after polls close at 7 p.m. The Alexandria Brief will report results as they come in.
