Old Town Oyster Week returns Saturday with shucking contest, passport and a week of events

Nine restaurants are taking part in the seventh annual event, which opens at 11 a.m. Saturday outside Daniel O’Connell’s and wraps up Oct. 18 with 75-cent oysters.

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — Old Town Oyster Week returns for its seventh year Saturday, opening with a shucking competition among restaurants and continuing with events and oyster specials through next weekend.

The kickoff runs from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Daniel O’Connell’s Irish Restaurant and Bar, 112 King St., where shuckers from Old Town restaurants will compete in the annual Restaurant Shucking Competition. Fish Market holds the trophy. Brian Gaffney will perform.

“This year is going to be really special with even more events happening throughout the week,” said Kate Brennan of Daniel O’Connell’s.
