About the candidate
Rivera served on the Alexandria City School Board, where she worked to close the achievement gap and ensure access to quality public schools for all students. She also served in the Clinton administration at the Commerce Department and Small Business Administration, leading international trade and small business programs.
Her priorities include affordable housing, fully funded schools, community safety, climate protection, accessible health care and support for the federal workforce.
“I’m committed to bringing thoughtful, inclusive leadership to Richmond — grounded in results and driven by our shared values,” Rivera said when she announced her candidacy.
Rivera was the first candidate to announce for the seat, launching her campaign hours after Del. Elizabeth Bennett-Parker’s commanding win in the Senate primary last week.
She faces City Councilman Kirk McPike and criminal defense attorney Chris Leibig in Tuesday’s firehouse primary. Voting runs from 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Beatley Library and Charles Houston Recreation Center.
The winner will face a Republican nominee in the Feb. 10 special election.
