Bennett-Parker, McPike win special elections; DHS lists alleged Alexandria DWI in 'murderers, pedophiles, rapists' release; Sheriff's Office earns reaccreditation
Democrats swept both special elections tonight. Elizabeth Bennett-Parker leads Senate District 39 with 83% of the vote, and Kirk McPike leads House District 5 with 82%. The victories keep both seats in Democratic hands — and set the stage for yet another election: a City Council firehouse primary on Feb. 21 to fill the seat McPike vacated yesterday.

Bennett-Parker, McPike win special elections. Bennett-Parker will fill the seat vacated by Sen. Adam Ebbin, and McPike will fill the seat vacated by Bennett-Parker. Both candidates campaigned together on Election Day, cross-endorsing each other. City Council is expected to certify McPike’s council vacancy tonight and authorize a special election for April 21.
In DHS release on ‘murderers, pedophiles, rapists’: an alleged Alexandria DWI. A Monday press release from the Department of Homeland Security listed 15 arrests, but does not distinguish between violent and non-violent offenses. One of the names was an Alexandria man arrested on a DWI charge.
Alexandria Sheriff’s Office, Detention Center earn reaccreditation from national corrections association. Auditors found the agency in full compliance with all mandatory standards. The office has held ACA accreditation since 1989.
