Regional board to revisit Potomac passenger ferry Wednesday as hydrofoil technology renews interest

Alexandria was a proposed stop in earlier studies. The Council of Governments board will also vote on fiscal 2028 dues, which would raise the city’s share by about $10,000.

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — The idea of a passenger ferry on the Potomac River, studied on and off for 25 years, goes back before regional leaders Wednesday, this time with a new kind of boat behind it.

The Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments board will be briefed on ferry studies at its noon meeting in Washington and asked whether it wants the idea examined again. No vote is scheduled. If the board is interested, the question can be sent to the region’s Transportation Planning Board, according to a staff memo.
