Tax season is winding down, and the City of Alexandria wants to help residents clean house — for free.

The city's Resource Recovery Division is hosting a free shredding event for Alexandria residents Saturday, April 18, from 9 a.m. to noon in the parking lot of MOM's Organic Market, 3871 Mt. Vernon Ave. The event is timed to coincide with Earth Month and the close of tax season.

Residents can bring documents, financial and legal records, sensitive mail, medical records and address books. Staples and paperclips are acceptable. All shredded materials will be securely recycled after the event, and residents can watch the shredding process live via a monitor mounted on the side of the truck.

Items not accepted include batteries, electronics, 3-ring binders, hanging folders, microfiche, plastic report covers, binder clips and acetate covers.

The event is open to city residents only. No registration is required.
