ALEXANDRIA, Va. — Gov. Abigail Spanberger accepted the Alexandria NAACP's Breaking Barriers Award on Thursday night and used the occasion to press for passage of a constitutional amendment that would automatically restore voting rights to Virginians who have completed felony sentences.

The branch's 93rd annual Freedom Fund Dinner ran from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at The Satire, 625 First St. It sold out last week for the first time in the branch's history. Spanberger received the award as Virginia's first woman governor.

Attorney General Jay Jones, Mayor Alyia Gaskins and the Black and Missing Foundation were also honored. This year's theme was "Breaking Barriers for the Next Generation." The dinner is the branch's largest fundraiser of the year.
