Gov. Abigail Spanberger has appointed two Alexandria residents to state boards and commissions, the governor's office announced Wednesday.
Justin Carl, general manager and CEO of AlexRenew, was named to the Interstate Commission on Potomac River Basin. Richard Lane, a contractor with the Blinded Veterans Association, was appointed to the Joint Leadership Council of Veterans Service Organizations.
The appointments are among more than 100 Spanberger has made in her first 60 days in office.
"I know these leaders will always put the Commonwealth first as we continue to focus on building a stronger future for Virginia students, families, and communities," Spanberger said in a statement.
Carl's role leading Alexandria's water resource recovery authority gives him direct professional ties to the Potomac River Basin commission's work overseeing water quality and resource management across the region. Lane's appointment to the veterans service council reflects Alexandria's longstanding ties to the military and federal defense communities.
Alexandrians interested in serving on a state board or commission can apply through the Secretary of the Commonwealth's office. The process involves researching available boards, submitting an application online, and — if selected — completing a financial disclosure statement and taking an oath of office. Virginia makes roughly 900 gubernatorial appointments per year on a rolling basis.
