ALEXANDRIA, Va. - A Virginia State Police pursuit that began on the Capital Beltway ended early Sunday with a crash and fire in Alexandria, where troopers took the fleeing driver into custody, authorities said.
The Alexandria Police Department, in a social media post around 5 a.m., said there was a heavy State Police presence at 225 S. Whiting St. after troopers pursued a vehicle into the city and it crashed into a parked vehicle, setting both vehicles on fire. APD said the driver was apprehended by State Police and that no injuries were reported. The city department said it assisted at the scene but was not involved in the pursuit or the arrest.
The chase began shortly before 1 a.m., when a trooper spotted a speeding vehicle on Interstate 495 near Telegraph Road in Fairfax County, State Police said in an account reported by the Daily Voice. The driver refused to stop and fled, leading troopers through the Springfield interchange and onto Interstate 395 north before exiting at Edsall Road.
The pursuit moved onto residential streets and into an apartment complex parking lot, where a trooper used a maneuver to stop the vehicle, State Police said. The driver jumped out and ran, but the vehicle was still in gear and rolled away on its own, striking a parked vehicle and catching fire. Troopers caught the driver after a short foot chase.
State Police did not name the apartment complex in that account; the S. Whiting Street address came from APD. The location is just off Edsall Road.
State Police had not identified the driver or announced charges as of Sunday morning, and the investigation was continuing.
