ALEXANDRIA, Va. — Power was restored to most of Alexandria by early Tuesday after a round of powerful thunderstorms swept through the region Monday evening, knocking out electricity to nearly 7,900 customers in the city at the height of the storms.
As of 5:31 a.m. Tuesday, Dominion Energy reported 140 customers without power in Alexandria, down from a peak of 7,893 the night before, according to the utility's outage map. Across Northern Virginia, outages fell to 6,565 by early Tuesday, with the largest remaining cluster in Fairfax County.
At their peak Monday evening, the storms had knocked out power to 7,893 of Dominion's 71,255 customers in Alexandria and to 47,733 across Northern Virginia, according to the utility's 7:46 p.m. outage report. Dominion said strong thunderstorms with damaging winds had hit its service area and that crews were working to restore power.
The storms came as the National Weather Service placed Alexandria and the surrounding area under Severe Thunderstorm Watch No. 375, which was in effect until 9 p.m. Monday. The watch, issued by the agency's Storm Prediction Center, stretched across the District, central Maryland and dozens of Virginia counties and independent cities, including Alexandria, Arlington and Fairfax. Forecasters had warned of damaging winds, isolated tornadoes and scattered urban and poor-drainage flooding.
In Alexandria, about 0.78 inches of rain — roughly 20 millimeters — was recorded in a home rain gauge during Monday's storms, according to a reading taken by The Alexandria Brief.
The weather service forecast more wet weather for Tuesday, with showers and a possible thunderstorm before the afternoon and a high near 79. Forecasters put the chance of precipitation at 100% and said another half-inch to three-quarters of an inch of rain was possible. Skies were expected to gradually clear Tuesday night, with a low around 62.
The City of Alexandria urged residents to report power outages or downed power lines to Dominion online at dominionenergy.com/outage or by calling 866-366-4357. Dominion advised customers to stay at least 30 feet from downed lines and to assume any downed line is energized.
