T&ES director accepts half the board's recommendation on Russell Road parking

Leah Riley dropped the loading zone and the five spaces in front of Naomi Brooks, citing the risk of double-parking at drop-off. She is adding six spaces on Johnston Place for school employees.

Corrected Oct. 3: An earlier version said staff returned in September with the parking the board had asked for. The board's July amendment asked staff to propose solutions for teacher parking, such as adjusting residential permit zone restrictions, not to add new spaces.

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — Transportation and Environmental Services Director Leah Riley has accepted part of the Traffic and Parking Board's recommendation on parking near Naomi L. Brooks Elementary School, dropping the five spaces and two loading zones her staff proposed for the 600 block of Russell Road while adding six spaces on Johnston Place.

The board had recommended Sept. 28 against adding any parking or loading zones at all.

In an Oct. 2 letter to the board, Riley said she saw the potential benefit of a loading zone in front of the school but that it would depend on compliance and active management.
