Traffic and Parking Board to consider overnight parking district, bus stop changes Monday

The Traffic and Parking Board will consider creating a new overnight parking district in the Beverley Hills neighborhood and approving parking modifications along the Old Town Circulator bus route at its virtual meeting on Monday.

The board will meet at 7 p.m. Jan. 26 via Zoom to take up several parking-related matters, including a resident-driven petition to restrict overnight parking in a northwest Alexandria neighborhood.

Residents of Beverley Hills submitted a petition in November requesting a Restricted Overnight Parking District covering 10 blocks near West Glebe Road. Under the proposal, parking would be prohibited from midnight to 6 a.m. unless a vehicle is registered with the city or displays a guest permit.

The petition, signed by 95 of 139 households in the proposed district, cites concerns about out-of-state vehicles, rideshare drivers, and commercial vehicles parking on residential streets for extended periods. A city-contracted parking survey conducted Jan. 14 found that, on average, 73 percent of vehicles parked overnight on the affected blocks were not registered with the city.

The board will also review proposed changes to bus stops and parking along the Old Town Circulator route on North Fairfax Street, Madison Street, and Montgomery Street. The plan would remove eight bus stops and add five new ones to improve spacing and accessibility. Staff are recommending removing up to 26 parking spaces across the three streets, while adding 19 spaces in other locations along the corridor.

DASH, which operates the circulator, submitted a letter supporting the project, noting it would enhance accessibility and improve on-time performance.

In other business, the board will consider adding approximately 100 parking spaces with two-hour time limits on the south side of Eisenhower Avenue between Metro Road and Clermont Avenue. The parking would replace one eastbound travel lane as part of planned safety improvements to the corridor.

The board will also take up an administrative adjustment to remove a property at 224 S. Peyton St. from Residential Permit Parking District 4. The site is being redeveloped into an eight-unit residential building with no off-street parking, and staff recommends excluding future residents from the parking district to preserve spaces for existing neighbors.
