ALEXANDRIA, Va. — A tractor-trailer making a delivery to the Harris Teeter at Foxchase Shopping Center struck an electrical service drop Tuesday, pulling the lines away from the building and igniting a fire that spread to several dumpsters, a vehicle and wooden fencing on the hill behind the shopping center, the Alexandria Fire Department said.
The damaged lines remained energized and began arcing, setting fire to combustibles on the ground, the department said. Firefighters could not attack the fire for about an hour while the power company de-energized the lines, and extinguished it once that work was done.
No one was injured and no buildings were damaged. The department determined the fire was accidental.
Alexandria police closed the alley behind the shopping center, between North Jordan Street and Duke Street, on Tuesday night while crews worked.
Fire department spokesman Taylor King confirmed the details in response to questions from The Alexandria Brief. The Alexandria Police Department has also been contacted about the incident.
