Virginia Railway Express will host a virtual community information session next week to brief Alexandria residents on construction activity tied to improvements at Alexandria Union Station and the replacement of the adjacent King & Commonwealth bridges.
The Microsoft Teams meeting is set for 7 p.m. on April 21, 2026. Residents can register at vre.org/events/alexandria-station-public-meeting. A confirmation email will be sent upon successful registration, and a meeting link will be distributed ahead of the event.
VRE — working in partnership with the Virginia Passenger Rail Authority and the city of Alexandria — says limited weekend construction work, including noise and single-block road closures at King Street and Commonwealth Avenue, has been scheduled across three windows this spring and early summer: May 1–4, May 15–18, and May 29–June 1.
Both projects are planned in conjunction with the Commonwealth's Transforming Rail in Virginia initiative, which officials say will unlock significant opportunities for passenger rail by enhancing reliability, capacity and the overall travel experience in the region.
The session will give community members a chance to hear directly from the project team, ask questions and get the latest updates on anticipated community impacts from both closely related efforts.
More information on the Alexandria Station Improvements and King & Commonwealth Bridge Replacement projects is available on VRE's website.
