Virginia's two U.S. senators threw their support behind Rep. Don Beyer's reelection Thursday, with Sens. Mark Warner and Tim Kaine both endorsing the seven-term incumbent in the Democratic primary for Virginia's 8th Congressional District.
Warner cited their joint work on the economy, infrastructure, and the federal workforce, as well as the response to last year's fatal midair collision at Reagan National Airport.
"Don and I have worked side by side for years to deliver results for Virginians and ensure their voices are heard in Washington," Warner said. "He has been a strong and principled ally in the fight to protect our federal workers and conduct the oversight needed to hold the Trump Administration accountable."
Kaine pointed to shared efforts to rein in presidential war powers and push back against the administration's tariff agenda.
"Don has been a trusted friend and colleague throughout our years of service to Virginia, and he is a key partner in our efforts to halt this president's tariffs and to restore Congress' authority over war powers," Kaine said. "I've been especially proud to work alongside Don to protect federal workers and our economy from the Trump Administration."
Beyer said the backing reflects years of collaboration on behalf of Virginia families.
"Senators Warner, Kaine, and I have worked together for years to stand up for Virginia families, and that work has never been more important," Beyer said. "I am honored and grateful to have their support as I seek reelection to continue standing up for Virginians in Congress."
The endorsements follow a similar show of support Tuesday from Gov. Abigail Spanberger, who also backed Beyer's reelection and praised his commitment to Virginia working families.
Beyer serves as the senior House Democrat on the Joint Economic Committee and sits on the House Committee on Ways and Means, which has jurisdiction over health care, trade, tax policy, Social Security, and Medicare.
The race is unfolding against the backdrop of a potential mid-decade redistricting that could significantly reshape Beyer's constituency. Virginia's 8th District currently covers Arlington, Alexandria, and parts of Fairfax County. Under a proposed Democratic redistricting plan, the redrawn 8th would extend south to York County in the Tidewater region — a dramatic geographic expansion that would incorporate portions of what is now the solidly Republican 1st District. Beyer has said he intends to run under the redrawn map if it takes effect. The primary was pushed from June to August to accommodate the ongoing redistricting uncertainty.
Whether the new map ever reaches voters remains uncertain. A statewide referendum on the redistricting amendment is scheduled for April 21, but the effort has faced sustained legal challenges. A Virginia judge ruled the amendment unlawful for the second time Feb. 19 — on grounds separate from an earlier ruling — though the Virginia Supreme Court had previously allowed the referendum to proceed. The legal fight is ongoing.
Beyer faces five Democratic challengers in the primary — Adam Dunigan, Michael Duffin, Frank Ferreira, Daniel Gray and Mo Seifeldein — as well as a Republican field that includes Heerak Christian Kim, Luke Nathan Phillips and Tony Sabio.
