The Woodrow Wilson Memorial Bridge will open early Thursday morning to allow a commercial tugboat to pass through, with additional closures planned overnight into Friday for scheduled maintenance, according to the City of Alexandria and AlertDC.

The bridge will open at 3:30 a.m. Thursday, March 12, for the Intra Recoil, a 71-foot, 2,000-horsepower towing vessel making a transit of the Potomac River. The tugboat is expected to return under the bridge around 11 p.m. the same day during a regularly scheduled maintenance opening.

The Intra Recoil is a U.S.-flagged commercial tug built in 1971 and operated by the Intra Marine Group of Lafayette, La. Vessels like the Recoil are workhorses of inland waterways, typically pushing or towing barges carrying cargo along river corridors — routine commercial traffic on the Potomac.

Woodrow Wilson Bridge Management has also issued an alert warning of a scheduled maintenance window running from 10 p.m. Thursday through 5 a.m. Friday, March 13, weather permitting. During that period, drivers should expect multiple bridge openings and intermittent traffic stops.

Motorists are advised to follow posted traffic warnings and allow extra travel time.
