ACPS cancels in-person school Monday; shifts to virtual learning amid winter storm

Alexandria City Public Schools reversed course Sunday night, announcing all schools and offices will be closed Monday, February 23, with students shifting to synchronous virtual learning as a winter storm brings snow and hazardous road conditions to the region.

The decision is an upgrade from the two-hour delay the district announced earlier Sunday afternoon.

All students will attend class remotely via Zoom. Families should check their student’s Canvas or Clever account by 8 a.m. Monday for the day’s schedule. Attendance will be taken, but no new content will be introduced and no grades will be assigned. Students in grades 3 through 12 should have their school-issued devices ready at home.

Elementary students in grades PreK-2 are expected to engage in two to three hours of live instruction; students in grades 3 through 5, four to five hours. Middle and high school students will follow their regular bell schedule, with 45 minutes of live instruction per block followed by independent work. Zoom links are available through each teacher’s Canvas page.

Essential personnel, including building engineers, custodians, maintenance staff, and security, should report if it is safe to do so.

Families with children enrolled in community programs or Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities should check with those providers regarding any schedule changes.

The National Weather Service has 2 to 4 inches of snow expected overnight, with wind gusts up to 37 mph. The Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect through 10 a.m. Monday.
