ACPS extends virtual learning through Friday; buildings remain closed

Alexandria City Public Schools will remain closed for in-person learning on Friday, extending virtual instruction for a fourth consecutive day as frigid temperatures continue to impact the region.

“Our decision is grounded in safety because we want to ensure our students and staff are safe,” Superintendent Melanie Kay-Wyatt said in a message to families Thursday afternoon.

The district cited continued cold temperatures, particularly in the early morning hours, and said extreme cold can affect bus operations and reliability. Conditions throughout the region remain challenging as many areas are still clearing accumulated ice and snow.

Mayor Alyia Gaskins said Thursday afternoon that residential roads are now 95% passable, up from 57% on Wednesday. Crews are prioritizing sidewalks, particularly routes leading to transit stops and schools, she said. City Manager Jim Parajon told the City Council on Tuesday that the storm was the worst ice storm in 30 years.

Students will participate in synchronous virtual learning via Zoom. Families should check Canvas or Clever by 8 a.m. for schedules. No new content will be taught and grades will not be assigned on virtual learning days. Posting of grades has been delayed due to this week’s closures.

Essential personnel, including building engineers, custodians, maintenance and security staff, must still report if safe to do so.

Free meals are available for children under 18 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Alexandria City High School (3330 King St., Door 34) and Charles Barrett Elementary (1115 Martha Custis Dr.).

A chance of snow returns Saturday, mainly after 1 p.m., with a 30% chance increasing to 40% Saturday night. The district said it is monitoring the weekend weather forecast and will provide an update Sunday by 6 p.m.
