Winter weather moves Alexandria City Council meeting to virtual format tonight
Regional transit plan, Potomac Yard Metro funding, Housing 2040 work session on the docket
This story was originally published on Thursday, January 22, 2026. It was updated on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, to reflect the move to virtual due to winter weather.
City Council will consider endorsing a regional transportation plan and modifications to the funding agreement for the Potomac Yard Metrorail Station when it meets virtually on Tuesday evening.
The legislative meeting begins at 7 p.m. Due to the Governor Abigail Spanberger's Declaration of Emergency related to winter weather, issued on January 22, and the City Manager's local emergency declaration on January 24, the meeting is being held electronically via Zoom.
Council will receive a presentation from the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments on DMVMoves, which was endorsed by the COG and WMATA boards in November. Arlington, Fairfax and Loudoun counties, along with the Northern Virginia Transportation Commission and Northern Virginia Transportation Authority, have already endorsed the plan.
Mayor Alyia Gaskins was elected vice chair of the COG Board of Directors earlier this month.
A separate agenda item calls for council to consider modifications to the WMATA funding agreement for the Potomac Yard Metrorail Station.
Council will also hold a work session on the Housing 2040 Plan, an update to the city’s 2013 Housing Master Plan. The plan, launched in September 2024, addresses key issues including housing affordability for service and hospitality workers, aging condominium buildings, the needs of a growing senior population and racial inequities in homeownership.
Staff is seeking council feedback on draft principles, goals and recommendations before a public hearing scheduled for this spring.
Council will also review the city’s strategic plan for fiscal years 2026-2028.
The meeting will open with a proclamation recognizing February as Black History Month.
Consent items on the docket include a grant application seeking up to $200,000 from the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services to combat hate crimes. If awarded, the funds would go toward security improvements and potentially hiring security personnel at local faith-based and nonprofit organizations that have been or are at risk of being targeted.
The docket also includes grant applications to the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation for FY 2027 state aid programs.
The meeting can be viewed on cable channel 70 or streamed on the city’s website. Residents can participate via Zoom.
