The Alexandria Police Department will hold three public ceremonies this week to honor officers who died in the line of duty, as part of Alexandria Police Week 2026.
"For our community, Alexandria Police Week is more than a ceremony; it is a shared moment of remembrance and responsibility," Police Chief Tarrick McGuire shared with The Alexandria Brief in a statement. "The wreath we lay is not just a symbol, but a solemn promise: we honor those who gave their lives serving our neighborhoods, stand with the families who carry that loss, and reaffirm that public safety is built together. Their sacrifice is part of our community's story, and it continues to guide how we serve, with honor, courage, and integrity, and how we care for one another."
Wreath Laying Ceremony
The week begins with the APD Wreath Laying Ceremony at 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 6, at the Alexandria Police Fallen Officers Memorial outside department headquarters, 3600 Wheeler Ave. The ceremony runs until 3 p.m., according to the city.
Waterfront Wreath Laying
A Waterfront Wreath Laying follows at 9 a.m. Thursday, May 7, at Waterfront Park, 1 Prince St., organized by the Alexandria Retired Police, Fire and Sheriffs Association.
Memorial Church Service
Later that morning, a Memorial Church Service will take place at 11 a.m. at First Assembly of God, 700 W. Braddock Rd. A lunch will follow the service.
All three events are free and open to the public, the city said.
The Fallen Officers Memorial, unveiled in 2015, honors the 18 Alexandria officers who have died in the line of duty since the department was established in 1870: Constable Elijah Chenault, Watchman Gerrard Arnold, Officer Julian Arnold, Officer George Crump, Officer Walker Campbell, Sgt. The week is being recognized in partnership with the Alexandria Police Foundation, the Alexandria Sheriff's Office and the Alexandria Retired Police, Fire and Sheriffs Association, according to materials shared by the department.
