Alexandria schools closed again Tuesday due to cold, road conditions
Wind chills to plunge below zero overnight; district plans to resume classes Wednesday
Alexandria City Public Schools will be closed for a second straight day Tuesday as below-freezing temperatures and poor road conditions persist following the weekend winter storm.
Superintendent Dr. Melanie Kay-Wyatt announced the closure on Monday afternoon. All ACPS schools and offices will be closed on Tuesday, Jan. 27.
Students were already scheduled to be off Monday for a teacher work day, which was also canceled due to the storm. Tuesday will be the first missed school day for students.
The National Weather Service has issued a cold weather advisory from 7 p.m. Monday to 11 a.m. Tuesday. Temperatures will drop to around 3°F overnight with wind chills as low as -4. Tuesday will be sunny but cold, with a high of only 28°F. Dangerous cold will persist through the week, with highs in the low 20s and overnight lows in the single digits through Friday.
All in-person afternoon and evening activities on school grounds are canceled on Tuesday, including programming provided by community organizations, athletics, band, and other extracurricular activities.
The Alexandria City School Board public hearing and work session scheduled for Tuesday evening may still take place virtually. Residents should check the ACPS website for updates.
The district plans to resume classes on Wednesday, Jan. 28, but warned that power outages or other unforeseen circumstances could force additional changes.
“Should any changes be necessary, we will communicate updated information as soon as possible,” Kay-Wyatt said.
Seven inches of snow fell on Alexandria during the weekend storm. A local emergency declared Saturday remains in effect.
Essential personnel, including building engineers, custodians, maintenance shop employees and security staff, should contact their direct supervisors for reporting instructions.
