A Del Ray institution is celebrating a milestone this spring, as the Mount Vernon Big Flea prepares for its 20th annual sale with an ambitious fundraising target and a building full of donated goods.

Organizers are aiming to raise $50,000 for Mount Vernon Community School during this year's event, scheduled for April 25 at the Mount Vernon Recreation Center, 2701 Commonwealth Ave.

Over two decades, the Big Flea has raised more than $250,000 for the school, funding tutoring programs, weekend food security initiatives and after-school opportunities for students.

"This fundraiser works because everyone benefits," organizer Rose said. "Families declutter, shoppers find affordable treasures, and the proceeds help our school."

Early-bird admission is $15 beginning at 7:30 a.m., with free general admission opening at 8:30 a.m.

New this year, organizers hope to debut specialty sections featuring musical instruments, LEGO sets, video games, and American Girl dolls and accessories — provided the donations come in.

Donations of gently used household items, toys, tools and kitchen goods will be accepted at drop-off events throughout March and April at 2525 Mount Vernon Ave. Books, stuffed animals, heavy furniture and textiles are not accepted. Large-donation pickups can be arranged at the event website.

The event is run entirely by volunteers, with support from local businesses including Bagel Uprising, Del Ray Hardware and real estate agent Jen Walker, who donates shopping bags for the sale.
