ALEXANDRIA, Va. — Southbound traffic was shut down Sunday morning in the 1000 block of N. Quaker Lane after downed power lines blocked the roadway, the Alexandria Police Department said.

The closure was reported about 8:54 a.m. Power outages were also reported in the area, police said.

About 951 customers were without power in the affected area, according to Dominion Energy's outage map. The utility listed the cause as a broken pole and estimated restoration between noon and 3 p.m. A crew was working the site as of midmorning.

Citywide, about 952 customers in Alexandria were without power as of 9:16 a.m., part of roughly 1,400 outages across Northern Virginia, Dominion's figures showed.

Police urged drivers to avoid the area and to treat dark traffic signals as four-way stops. Dominion and the city's Department of Transportation and Environmental Services were on the scene, according to police.
