ALEXANDRIA, Va. - Early in-person voting for Alexandria's Aug. 4 dual primary opens Thursday, June 18, the city's Office of Voter Registration and Elections has announced. Any registered Virginia voter may cast a ballot early, and no excuse is required.

While the state's early-voting period formally begins June 19, Alexandria's elections office is closed that day for the Juneteenth holiday and will instead open for early voting on June 18.

The dual primary features two contests. Democrats will pick their nominee for the U.S. House in Virginia's 8th District, and Republicans will choose their nominee for the U.S. Senate.

Five Democrats are running in the 8th District: incumbent Rep. Don Beyer, who has held the seat since 2015, along with Lorena Bruner, Michael Duffin, Adam Dunigan and Mo Seifeldein. The district is among the most Democratic in the country, making the primary the contest to watch. Tony Sabio is unopposed in the Republican primary and would be the GOP nominee in November.

On the Senate side, three Republicans are competing for the nomination: Bert Mizusawa, Kim Farington and David Williams.

The primary winners advance to the Nov. 3 general election. The Republican Senate nominee would challenge Democratic incumbent Sen. Mark Warner. In the 8th District, the Democratic nominee would face Sabio.

Sample ballots for both primaries are available at alexandriava.gov/Elections.

Most early voting takes place at the Office of Voter Registration and Elections, 132 N. Royal St., Suite 100, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays. The office is closed June 19 and July 3.

A second site, the Charles E. Beatley Jr. Central Library, 5005 Duke St., opens on four dates only: Sunday, July 19, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Saturday, July 25, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Sunday, July 26, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.; and Saturday, Aug. 1, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The deadline for in-person early voting is 5 p.m. Aug. 1.

Voters can request a mail ballot online at vote.elections.virginia.gov or by mail, fax or email to the Royal Street office. The deadline to request one is 5 p.m. July 24. A ballot drop box outside the elections office, under 24-hour video surveillance, stays open until 7 p.m. on Election Day.

The deadline to register or update an address for this election is also July 24.

Voters will be asked to show identification before voting; a list of acceptable IDs is at the Virginia Department of Elections website. Residents can check their registration and polling place at vote.elections.virginia.gov.
