The City of Alexandria is once again offering free tax preparation services for residents, with trained volunteers available to help filers navigate their federal and state returns starting Feb. 4.

The program, run in partnership with Community Tax Aid Inc. and the Virginia CASH Campaign, serves individuals and families with household incomes up to $69,000. Volunteers help ensure eligible credits and deductions are applied, maximizing refunds while avoiding costly errors.

Sessions run through April 18 at the Del Pepper Community Resource Center, 4850 Mark Center Dr., 5th floor. Hours are Wednesdays from 6–8 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m.–noon. Appointments are strongly encouraged; limited walk-ins are available.

Residents should bring photo ID, Social Security cards for everyone on the return, income statements (W-2s, 1099s), and bank account information for direct deposit. Those who received health insurance through the marketplace should bring Form 1095-A, and anyone with an IRS Identity Protection PIN should bring that letter as well.

The volunteer program cannot prepare returns involving cryptocurrency, rental property income, self-employment with inventory, or income from other countries. Residents who arrived in the U.S. during 2025 or hold F, J, A, H, L, or M visas are also outside the program’s scope.

To schedule an appointment, call 202-830-1480 (English) or 202-869-2999 (Spanish). Check alexandriava.gov/calendar for weather-related closures.

The tax program is one of several resources DCHS highlighted this month. The department also promoted its mental health services for residents navigating stress or anxiety in the new year, its fatherhood engagement program supporting dads in being more present in their children’s lives, and a reminder that the city’s winter shelter remains open for unhoused residents. DCHS is also hosting “Building Blocks of Mobility,” a community conversation on economic opportunity. More information is available at alexandriava.gov/dchs.
