Updated 6:30 p.m. — Dominion reported 91 Alexandria customers without power as of 6:16 p.m., down from about 5,312 around 4 p.m. One outage of 88 customers near Del Ray and Northeast Alexandria is estimated for restoration between 11 p.m. and 2 a.m. Wednesday, with crews awaiting assignment. Spokesperson Aisha Khan said earlier that crews were returning a circuit to its normal feed and expected everything restored within about an hour.
ALEXANDRIA, Va. — More than 10,000 Dominion Energy customers in Alexandria lost power Tuesday morning, and nearly all of them had it back within two hours. The utility has not said what caused the outages.
Dominion's outage map showed 10,407 Alexandria customers out at 7:15 a.m., about 15% of the 71,478 the utility serves in the city. That is more than the 9,127 recorded at the peak of Friday's storm outages. By 9:01 a.m., 29 customers remained without power, and by 12:45 p.m., 18.
Four outages made up the city's total. The largest, 3,598 customers in Rosemont and Taylor Run, was restored within about 15 minutes. The others covered Northeast Alexandria toward Potomac Yard, a strip running from Potomac Yard south through Del Ray, and Del Ray and Potomac. The count fell to 6,946 by 7:31 a.m. and 2,227 by 8:01 a.m.
Dominion listed the cause of every one of them as pending investigation, and has not said whether they were related to one another or to Friday's storms. The two small outages still active later Tuesday morning carried the same designation, with restoration estimated between noon and 3 p.m. By midday, Dominion's map showed no large outage areas anywhere in the city, only a handful of small ones scattered from the West End to Del Ray.
For most of the morning the outages were almost entirely Alexandria's. At 7:15 a.m. the city accounted for 10,407 of the 10,866 customers Dominion reported out across Virginia, or about 96%. Arlington had 22 customers out.
Outages return in the afternoon
Power went out again across parts of the city Tuesday afternoon. About 5,312 customers were without service around 4 p.m. Dominion's map showed 2,608 at 4:32 p.m. and the same figure at its 4:45 p.m. update.
Three outages accounted for nearly all of them: 1,348 customers across Rosemont and Taylor Run, with restoration estimated between 7 and 10 p.m.; 885 customers in Del Ray and Rosemont, estimated 8 to 11 p.m.; and 363 customers in Del Ray and Potomac, also estimated 8 to 11 p.m. All three listed crews as awaiting assignment, and all three gave the cause as pending investigation.
Dominion said late Tuesday afternoon that crews were on site working to return a circuit to its normal feed and expected to have everything restored within about an hour. Aisha Khan, the utility's media and community relations manager for Northern Virginia, said 2,225 customers were out and that the outage started at 3:47 p.m. The map had shown 2,608 at its two previous updates.
Most of that was resolved by evening. Dominion reported 91 Alexandria customers out at 6:16 p.m. But one outage affecting 88 customers near Del Ray and Northeast Alexandria was estimated for restoration between 11 p.m. and 2 a.m. Wednesday, with crews awaiting assignment — a window that runs several hours past what Khan described, and past what the map itself had shown earlier in the afternoon.
Khan did not say what caused the outages or whether the afternoon round was connected to the morning's, which hit many of the same neighborhoods. The Brief has asked.
The city did not issue an advisory, and ACPS did not say whether any schools were affected. Alexandria City Public Schools was in session Tuesday.
