Old Town among six terminals eyed for hydrofoil ferry pilot on the Potomac

Backers told a regional board Wednesday the boats could reach Navy Yard in 20 minutes. Mayor Alyia Gaskins said leaving Old Town out would be “a missed opportunity” but asked how the city’s past concerns would be addressed.

ALEXANDRIA, Va. - Old Town is one of six sites recommended for further study as a terminal for a hydrofoil ferry pilot that its backers say could reach Navy Yard in 20 minutes, the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments board heard Wednesday.

Mayor Alyia Gaskins, a vice chair of the board, said Old Town should be part of it.

“I think it would be a missed opportunity if Old Town was not included,” she said, while asking what would be different for a city that has raised concerns about ferry plans before. She said she could not yet say whether the city has “significant interest.”
