Construction crews celebrated the opening of Hooffs Run Pocket Park this week, a small green space created as part of the RiverRenew program led by AlexRenew, Alexandria's wastewater treatment provider.
The park is located at the intersection of Dangerfield Road and Duke Street. From there, visitors can continue exploring Hooffs Run along the adjacent African American Heritage Park.
The pocket park is part of the Hooffs Run Interceptor project, which AlexRenew says has already diverted 90% of combined sewer overflows from Alexandria's legacy sewer system to its treatment plant — significantly reducing untreated wastewater from reaching local waterways.
RiverRenew is designed to prevent millions of gallons of combined sewage from polluting the city's rivers and streams each year. Beyond the tunnel infrastructure, the program includes a series of public space enhancements along Alexandria's waterways, including riparian buffer improvements and a new boardwalk trail along Hooffs Run, a community promenade at Pendleton Street and habitat restoration at Jones Point Park.
AlexRenew is a political subdivision of the Commonwealth of Virginia that manages wastewater for more than 300,000 people in Alexandria and parts of Fairfax County.
