A high-speed pursuit on Interstate 495 spilled into Alexandria Tuesday night after a suspect fled on foot across highway lanes and into the city, triggering a multiagency manhunt that ended with an arrest at a Washington, D.C., Metro station.
The chase began at approximately 9:09 p.m. when a Virginia State Police trooper attempted to stop a black Chrysler 300 for expired temporary registration on I-495 southbound at the Mixing Bowl. The driver refused to stop. Additional troopers joined the pursuit as it continued onto I-495 eastbound, where the suspect rear-ended a tractor trailer east of Telegraph Road, then abandoned the vehicle and ran across all lanes of the interstate and into Alexandria.
During the foot pursuit on the highway, the trooper who had initiated the original stop was struck by an uninvolved vehicle. He was transported to an area hospital and is listed in stable condition.
Once in Alexandria, the suspect made his way to the Eisenhower Avenue Metro station, where he fare-evaded and boarded a train. With the assistance of multiple law enforcement agencies and Metro's extensive camera network, he was tracked to L'Enfant Plaza station in Washington, D.C. Metro Transit Police identified the suspect there, and a struggle ensued during the arrest.
The suspect, Gregory S. Newton, 57, of Springfield, Va., faces Virginia charges of eluding, hit and run, possession of a controlled substance and driving while suspended. Metro Transit Police have charged Newton with assault on a police officer. The incident remains under investigation.
