ALEXANDRIA, Va. - Music and visual art will share the stage in Alexandria later this month when the Symphony Orchestra of Northern Virginia closes its season with a concert built around works that also inspired a citywide art project.

SONOVA will perform "Pictures at an Alexandria Exhibition" at 3 p.m. Saturday, May 30, at the Rachel M. Schlesinger Concert Hall and Arts Center on the Alexandria campus of Northern Virginia Community College. Tickets are available through the SONOVA website, with prices increasing $5 at the door.

The concert is the culmination of a months-long collaboration between SONOVA, Del Ray Artisans, and the Symphony Orchestra League of Alexandria. Del Ray Artisans issued a call for entries earlier this year, asking local artists to create work inspired by four selections on the May 30 program. The selected pieces will be displayed digitally during the concert and are being sold through an online auction hosted by Ararity Auctions.

The music

The program features four works that span the American and Russian repertoire:

  • Ferde Grofé's "Grand Canyon Suite," Movement 4: "Sunset"
  • "Dances of the Knights" from Sergei Prokofiev's "Romeo and Juliet" ballet
  • Aaron Copland's "Billy the Kid Suite," Movements 6, 7 and 8: "Celebration," "Billy's Death" and "The Open Prairie"
  • Grofé's "Mississippi Suite," Movement 3: "Mardi Gras"

The auction

The online auction is live now at LiveAuctioneers and closes Sunday, May 31, at 6 p.m. Bidders need to create a LiveAuctioneers account, add a payment method, and register for the sale. Absentee bids are being accepted throughout the month, with live bidding beginning May 31.

Proceeds will support the participating artists along with SONOVA and Del Ray Artisans, helping fund live performances, community programming, and opportunities for area artists.
