ALEXANDRIA, Va. - A who's who of Alexandria's current and former elected officials endorsed U.S. Rep. Don Beyer's reelection bid Monday, offering a broad show of local support as the seven-term congressman heads into a contested Democratic primary in August.

The endorsement was signed by Mayor Alyia Gaskins, Vice Mayor Sarah Bagley and City Council members Canek Aguirre, John Chapman, Jacinta Greene and Sandy Marks. Councilmember Abdel Elnoubi did not sign on. Former Mayors Bill Euille, Allison Silberberg and Justin Wilson also signed, as did Commonwealth's Attorney Bryan Porter, Clerk of the Court Greg Parks and Sheriff Sean Casey.

The full Alexandria School Board endorsed Beyer as well, including Chair Michelle Rief, Vice Chair Christopher Harris and members Abdulahi Abdalla, Tim Beaty, Kelly Carmichael Booz, Alexander Crider Scioscia, Donna Kenley, Ashley Simpson Baird and Ryan Reyna.

"Congressman Don Beyer has been a steadfast partner to the City of Alexandria during some of the most challenging moments facing our community," Gaskins said in a statement. She credited Beyer with helping the city navigate the Trump administration's immigration enforcement policies and with securing federal funding to modernize sewage infrastructure, strengthen flood mitigation and support long-term economic growth.

"At a time when many immigrant families have felt uncertainty and fear amid the Trump administration's cruel immigration enforcement policies, Don has worked closely with local leaders to support and protect our diverse community and ensure Alexandria remains a welcoming place for all," Gaskins said.

Beyer, 75, called Alexandria "a special community" and said he was honored to have the support of the city's leaders. "I look forward to continuing to work with local officials to stand up for Alexandrians in Congress, and I'm honored to have the support of such dedicated and effective local leaders as I seek re-election in Virginia's 8th District," he said.

A crowded primary

Beyer faces five Democratic challengers in the Aug. 4 primary: former Alexandria City Council member Mohamed "Mo" Seifeldein, Marine combat veteran and former CIA case officer Adam Dunigan, Arlington energy manager Daniel Gray, former State Department official Michael Duffin and Frank Ferreira. The filing deadline for U.S. House candidates is May 26.

On the Republican side, Anthony Arthur Sabio and Heerak Christian Kim have announced campaigns. The 8th District — which covers Arlington, Alexandria, Falls Church and parts of Fairfax County — is rated as solidly Democratic, making the Democratic primary the de facto general election.

Beyer has previously been endorsed by Gov. Abigail Spanberger and U.S. Sens. Mark Warner and Tim Kaine. He won his last race in 2024 with 71.5% of the vote. The general election is Nov. 3, 2026.
