They run a thrift store on N. Columbus Street. They open Alexandria's oldest homes to strangers every fall. And for 93 years, they have funneled every dollar of the proceeds to the hospital down on Seminary Road.

On Thursday, The Twig announced its latest — and most public — commitment yet.

The Junior Auxiliary of Inova Alexandria Hospital pledged $2 million to the health system's new campus rising at the former Landmark Mall site. In recognition of the gift, the new hospital's conference center will carry The Twig's name.

"This gift represents both our history and our future," said Twig President Lori Ring. "Twig members have long believed a strong hospital is essential to a strong community."

The commitment brings The Twig's total contributions to Inova Alexandria Hospital to more than $7 million since the group's founding in 1933. The gift is part of Inova's Do. More. Together. campaign, a systemwide fundraising effort to expand care across Northern Virginia.

Rina Bansal, president of Inova Alexandria Hospital, said the pledge reflects something that goes beyond a dollar figure.

"For decades, Twig members have given their time, their energy and their resources to support patient care," Bansal said. "Their newest gift will help ensure that the next generation of patients benefits from world-class facilities and services right here in Alexandria."

A campus years in the making

Plans for the Landmark campus date to December 2020, when Inova, the City of Alexandria, and development partners announced the project. Rezoning was approved in 2021. Permits followed. Construction on the hospital itself started in 2024.

This year, work begins on two additional facilities — a cancer center and an outpatient surgery center — with all three expected to open in 2028. The schedule, Inova notes, remains preliminary.

The new campus will be a marked departure from what stands on Seminary Road today. The emergency room will be larger. Every patient room will be private. The Inova Schar Cancer Institute at Alexandria Hospital will offer radiation and infusion services under one roof, and a medical office building will bring an estimated 50 specialty physicians on site.

Meanwhile, the Seminary Road property — home to the hospital for more than 70 years — will be rezoned for townhouses and single-family homes, a change Alexandria City Council has already approved.

The Twig has been there for all of it — the old building and, now, the new one.
