ALEXANDRIA, Va. - It's a long weekend for ACPS students, with no school Friday, and there's plenty to fill it. Friday is the pick of the weekend for outdoor plans, with sun and a high near 88 degrees. A front then brings showers and a 20-degree drop in temperature.
Old Town Cocktail Week runs all weekend, with bars and restaurants throughout Old Town joining in.
On Saturday, the 31st annual Art on the Avenue takes over Mount Vernon Avenue between Hume and Bellefonte avenues from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The showers are forecast to clear mostly before 8 a.m., leaving a cloudy, cool day near 68 degrees. The free festival features more than 350 local and regional artists, live music, international food, kids' activities and a pie baking contest. Skip the parking hunt: free trolleys run from the Potomac Yard and Braddock Road Metro stations, and there's a free bike valet at Mount Vernon and Hume avenues.
Elsewhere Saturday, Carlyle House kicks off spooky season with a family fun day, and Fort Ward Museum hosts Civil War Shelter Day. Sunday looks like the wettest day of the weekend, which makes it a good day for the Washington Metropolitan Philharmonic at the George Washington Masonic National Memorial. Commanders fans will need an early start, since the team plays the Colts in London at 9:30 a.m.
With rain in the forecast, check with event organizers for the latest on outdoor events before you head out.
