Alexandria's Transportation Commission meets Wednesday, April 15, with three items worth watching: a vote on the city's five-year commuter assistance strategy, an update on a proposed Metro station redevelopment near Braddock Road, and a leadership election.
The meeting begins at 7:45 p.m. — later than the commission's usual 7 p.m. — at 2900B Business Center Drive, North Quaker Lane Room. It is also accessible via Zoom at zoom.us/j/95028234542 (Meeting ID: 950 2823 4542, Passcode: 947959). Written testimony can be submitted until 3 p.m. Wednesday to transportationcommission@alexandriava.gov.
GO Alex strategic plan
The commission's main action item is a vote to endorse the GO Alex Strategic Plan for fiscal years 2027 through 2031. If approved, the plan heads to city council in May.
Beyond maintaining existing commuter assistance programs, the plan floats several new ideas worth watching: an e-bike incentive program, a youth transportation program, an e-bike lending library and a water taxi feasibility study. Whether any of those move forward will depend on future grant funding and council direction.
Braddock Road Metro redevelopment
Metro is proposing to redevelop the approximately 3.6-acre property on the east side of the Braddock Road Metro Station to enable joint development — meaning housing or commercial space built alongside transit infrastructure. The proposal would reconfigure the existing bus loop and close the station's 21-space Kiss & Ride lot.
Residents who use that drop-off facility or want to weigh in on what gets built there have a public hearing Monday, April 20, at Charles Houston Recreation Center, 901 Wythe St. An open house runs from 6:30 to 7 p.m., with the formal hearing beginning at 7 p.m. Written comments are accepted through April 30.
Separately, a proposed safety project that would add bike lanes along Braddock Road between Russell Road and North West Street — removing parking in the process — is headed to city council after an appeal of the Traffic and Parking Board's February endorsement. That public hearing is tentatively set for May 16.
Leadership election
The commission will also elect a new chair and vice chair. Chair Matthew McManus has said he is not seeking another term. New commissioner appointments are delayed, but the commission plans to proceed with the election Wednesday.
The meeting is open to the public. Drivers should enter from Roth Street off Duke Street. Bike parking is available on-site.
